Wine Radar: What’s the story?

I’m an old wino from the IT industry, and Wine Radar is my hobby project.

Like many time-poor wine tragics, I started by outsourcing my wine selection decisions and signed up for the  “premium monthly dozen” with a popular wine retailer. After 12 months of the occasional good drop surrounded by buckets of cardboard quality, I decided to resume control.

I discovered that doing your own homework made a big difference. All the major wine retailers advertise on the web, and there are plenty of independent expert sources for confirming wine quality. I did some manual research and developed my own wine selection rules based on price, discount and expert scores. I had a simple objective: finding great wine at great prices. Using this basic research and selection methodology, I achieved fabulous results. Since then I have only been buying and drinking great wine, and I have never paid full price.

But after 15 years of manually looking for wine specials and then laboriously cross-referencing the experts’ scores, I decided there must be an easier way. Being an IT bloke, I decided to go electronic. So I built myself an automated system that scans the internet for wines, prices and expert scores, and finds the best wine deals.

I called this system my Wine Radar, and it actually works like magic! Wine Radar now scans over a dozen retailers, over 10,000 wines, and usually discovers about 100 great wine deals.

After showing Wine Radar to my friends, I discovered that many of them were also frustrated winos. As it turns out, lots of people are looking for great wines at great prices. What a surprise! Well, maybe not …

So I started sending my Wine Radar monthly report to my friends and colleagues.

Month by month my numbers grew, and before long I had well over 1,000 people on my mailing list. The feedback is always great, and apparently they are all very happy enjoying the juices of the fruits of my labours.
